A personal journal - covering my experience on a 28 day detox. The purpose of this series is to shed light on the subject of whole body cleansing for those who are on the fence. May these entries serve as a lil motivation and make it less scary. A word of advice: seek guidance before starting any detox. I am a health professional yet am doing this under the direction of a health center,
Treat Wellness.Keys to success- Preparation - having a plan to follow is helpful. You don't start without knowing what to eat, drink, and follow a schedule.
- Attitude - going into it with an optimistic point of view and without expectations (ie...some people loose weight on a cleanse, but expecting that could lead to unnecessary disappointment if you don't)
- Commitment - you might have a few slip ups, but do the best you can by intending to stay the course, no matter what.
- Supplements - not all products are created equal. The right supplements will aid in the elimination of stored toxins and restore health. For this 28 day detox, I am using "designs for health" found at my health center. However, I've also used a 7 day cleanse from "nutriclean". Both are great. I do not support programs that deny food of any kind. I feel that it is extreme and unnecessary.
Why do a cleanse? We all have toxins in our system. They store in our fat cells, and pollute our fluids leading to diseases. Needless to say we function optimally with less waste. Toxins passively find their way into our bodies just by doing the most common mindless things like eating food cooked on teflon, drinking out of plastic bottles or aluminum cans, chemicals in our personal care items, pesticides, car exhausts, dental fillings, artificial sugars, etc. However, it's not a passive process eliminating them. We must
make an effort to rid them from our system and be more conscious of what we eat and drink. I usually do two cleanses per year to aid my body's waste removal system. I swear this is what keeps me young and healthy.
Food limitations:No processed foods, wheat flour (found in cereals, breads, pasta's) artificial ingredients of any kind (colors, sugars, chemicals) alcohol, drugs, coffee, dairy (yogurt, milk, cheese)
Do: drink lots of pure water, herbal teas, fresh fruits/veggies, organic as much as possible. I like Ezekiel wraps/muffins as a substitute for bread. With live enzymes and sprouted grains, it makes for a delicious healthy option.
Week 1:Supplements: OPC-3,
digestive enzymes w probiotics,
fish oil, Vit DVitamixed my superfood smoothies everyday: Complete meal, 2-3x per day. Added frozen and fresh fruit, Acai, almond milk, coconut milk, chia seed or flax, PaleoCleanse, PaleoMeal,Detox pak,
Complete Greens, Advanced Fiber w probiotics & L-Glutamine. Lots of herbal teas...damiani or yogi tea brand.
B-fast: ezekiel muffins, eggs w spinach and garlic, gluten free pancakes w coconut flour, flax, and agave (limit)
Snacks: granola with banana, nuts/seeds, hummus & rice crackers, ezekiel muffins w almond butter and grape jelly (natural, no added sugar) coconut icecream (not really part of the diet :o) rice cakes
Main meals: This week I made a huge dish that I literally ate everyday... (I'm all about convenience) Lentil soup w brown rice and had salads on the side. Salads had peppers, avocado, seeds, pineapple, dried cranberries, spring mix, spinach, homemade dressing w ginger and garlic.
I did cheat a couple of times: One night, I had a beer (shame) while I was out listening to live Celtic music, so who can blame me...It was a weak moment, but already forgiven

. I allowed myself 2 pieces of chocolate for valentines day, then hid them from site after I literally started sweating.
How I felt:My body was TIRED...so I honored it and rested as much as possible. My stomach is very sensitive and has a hard time breaking down protein and the increase in fiber...so needless to say I was in a little pain and bloated, but not nearly as bad as I expected. Overall, my body took it very well.
Exercise: Yoga and dance...although not so much, do to being so tired.
Emotionally:I am a firm believer in positive affirmations to keep optimistic and to accomplish my goals. Whenever doing something outside of the "norm" routine, it's important to program your subconscious mind. I do the
"Gayatri Mantra" daily for spiritual protection, guidance and enlightenment.
I am cleansing more than my body, I am also purifying my mind and
energy. I cherish my life, and am honoring it by removing impurities that are of a low vibration (heavy) and hold me back from achieving my highest level of living.
WEEKS 2-3:
Supplements and smoothies same as above - plus aloe juice
B-fast and snacks- same as above
Main meals - I usually make a big dinner and eat it for lunch the next day and if all goes well, another dinner. I'm all about convenience. Homemade quesadia's with tomatoe soup (sauteed tempeh, garlic, onion, hot pepper sauce, shitaki mushrooms, spinach, asparagus, soy cheese or raw organic cheddar on an Ezekiel wrap) Sauteed veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, tempeh) Quinoa patties, Grape leaves stuffed with garbanzos rice and seasons. Rice pasta with tomato sauce, big salads fully loaded with all kinds of goodness and homemade dressing (balsamic, olive oil, ginger, garlic, oj, seasons) Roasted root veggies with brussel sprouts and brown rice medley.
Exercise I joined the YMCA and am figuring things out with free weights & some kinda cardio for 10-20 minutes, and abs. I also dance 2x or more per week
Physical & Emotional I struggled to keep up this last week. I actually got a bad cold, so had to take otc meds for symptoms (I resisted) and my mom got me a cake for a special celebration (newly single) and I ate half of it =o I KNOW...the shame. My girls threw a party for me and I drank sangria (with fruit...so it was "healthy" lol) SOOOO....i decided to take a few extra days of cleansing on top of the 28 days. UGH - but it was all worth it!
WEEK 4-5Continued with smoothies as usual, loaded with frozen fruits, coconut milk, chia seed or flax, fiber and probiotic powder and greens, detox powder, protein powder. I added my
Isotonix supplements to enhance its vitamin/minerals.
FOOD: See this cookbook for GREAT clean recipes. A kitchen must have for every household. I am simple...see meals from prior weeks.
I actually feel like my body is very sensitive to what I put in it now. I've been eating well for sometime now, but purging my toxins has "lightened" me up. Today I feel GREAT! Earlier in the 2nd week I had a mild headache, normal symptom of detox.
I kept having
dreams about whales and sharks, which according to the dream dictionary can mean intuition or a feeling of being overwhelmed (whale) and aggressive behavior with no regard for others or anger and hostility (shark) hmmmm.....
POST DETOX REPORT: March 17, 2010
Guys...I went on a binge with cookies and cake this week. (my version of binge, anyway) When it's in my presence, I am weak (my kryptonite). I am acutely observing my eating habits now, and am curious about where this reckless abandon for my health is coming from? Stuffing something, apparently. I will make note, and stay aware of what, how & why I eat. Even us skinny chicas have vices.
I still feel FABULOUS.... quick recovery from sugar binge (although I did sleep poorly on the nights that I indulged)
That's all for now...until I blog again - Namaste.
